Our Food Prep Tips & Recipes

We totally understand if you see “food prep” and it makes you roll your eyes. When will you have time to cook all this food? We thought, and still sometimes feel that way about food prep but it really does help us during our busy weeks. Our weekends always consist of Sunday grocery shopping and then we prep together. We actually enjoy it now, it took time to get there but now its when Tyler and I get to spend time together.

Tyler and I both work long hours during the day, and have little time after work. So when we get home, the idea of “what do we do for dinner?” or the thought of needing to have to make for lunches for tomorrow never sounds so great. Here are our few tips on what we find food prep a little easier.

  • First thing first, make a organized grocery list. We split ours up by category, I found out this is how Ina Garten makes hers…Ina always has GOOD ideas! Categories: Dairy, Meats, Pantry, Frozen, Vegetables, Fruit and other.

  • Tyler and I have a “Food list” on our google drive. We both will go in throughout the week and type in thing we need.

  • We tend to go to the grocery store either later Saturday night or early Sunday morning, this usually helps us miss those Sunday crowds.

  • Have a few “go to” meals, helps when you just aren’t feeling that creative.

  • If you get bored do some research on a new recipe to try or how to add something to your weekly salad you bring to work.

  • We usually have a few snacks ready to grab and go. This makes one less thing to think about when you might have slept through your alarm!

  • Enjoy this cooking time with dancing music, a friend, family, your animals or just a nice little alone time :)

This week I made a quinoa bowl, filled with roasted veggies, Crockpot chicken, black beans and hummus. I really love making bowls because you can put whatever you want in there. I tend to not be a big lunch person but I know I need to eat. Bowls are easy to have on hand, grab a few bites and then keep the day going!

On the snacks side, just a container of raspberries, celery and sugar snap peas. I always have some type of fruit, this week I have a few ziplock bags of grapes ready to grab and go!
